Recognising the value of mentoring

The Celebrating Diversity category recognises the value of mentoring in supporting development across a range of diverse activities including education, employment and personal development.

Empower - Be The Change has worked with the 4 students at St Christopher's School since October 2016.  Initially, through our empowerment programme which saw all 4 students successfully complete an ILM level 2 qualification, Level 3 sports leaders qualification and completing over 150 hours of community based volunteering.   Each of the 4 received mentoring support from Jo Clay and based on their positive response to this the students were selected to take part in our mentor programme which started in September 2017.

St Christopher's school is the largest special needs school in Wales and the students we have been working with all struggle with mild/moderate learning disabilities. For these students reading and writing is a real challenge. To complete assignments and other written work takes much longer and is much more challenging as compared to main stream pupils. Added to this the pupils suffer from low self confidence and low self belief.  Aspirations are low as the students do not believe they have the skills and talents to enter further education and/or pursue the career they have a passion for. The 4 students nominated, successfully completed their sports leaders level 2 and along with 10 other peers were selected to take part in our Empowerment Programme.  All 14 students successfully completed the ILM qualification and took up community volunteer placements.  However, the 4 students nominated went above and beyond and demonstrated a high degree of commitment, enthusiasm and motivation to not only complete the courses but to support their peers to do the same.   The students sourced their own volunteer placements, contacted the lead for each club and took themselves to weekly sessions to support the club junior sports sessions. All 4 exceeded the minimum 15 volunteer hours with one of the students completing nearly 80 hours.  All became key members of the community clubs they supported and have received high praise from these organisations for their work.   Throughout this programme all 4 received mentoring support from Jo Clay, the school and community club where they volunteered.  At each session they responded well to feedback (which was sometimes challenging) and made positive changes which not only changed their outlook but inspired other pupils at the school to do the same.   Based on their positive can do approach the 4 students were selected to take part in our mentor programme. The students were selected based on their maturity and natural leadership skills.

It has made Empower – Be The Change realise the true potential of mentoring and how supporting people to realise the things they love, the things they are good and the skills they have can set them on a hugely successful path.  Time and time again these students have surpassed expectation and it has reinforced to Empower that there is so much more to people if they are given the right opportunities and mentoring support.”   Jo Clay, Founder & Managing Director, Empower - Be The Change

The sessions were delivered at Glyndwr University which relied on commitment, maturity and responsibility of the students to manage their own learning.  This is the first time the school have allowed students to attend a course off school site without school staff supervision.  In total, the students attended 6 sessions and between each one were tasked with using their new knowledge and skills to support their peers through the sports leaders qualification.  The students received mentoring support following each session and were encouraged to reflect, plan and evaluate their new role as mentors.  The mentoring they have undertaken with their peers has been very well received and has inspired their peers of what can be achieved. The students have now completed the course content and have been tasked with writing a minimum 1500 word assignment to gain the ILM qualification. Again this is wholly reliant on the students taking full control of their learning and seeking additional mentoring support as and when they need it.   The students have grown considerably in confidence and have far greater self belief.  They realise they have many skills and are able to use these effectively to support their peers to realise their potential.

The award is a wonderful achievement for me and my peers. We have found working with Jo a fantastic experience and it is lovely to see all our hard work being recognised by other people.” Scott, Winner of the Mentee of the Year, St Christopher’s School.

Each of the students is clear about their long term plans and through the mentoring support they have received they now all want to be in roles where they will be able to mentor others.

Notably one of the students who was attacked outside of school (in July 2016) and fearful of going out has rebuilt his confidence and now actively seeks opportunities to support others.  One student won the Lidl play more football award based on their sports leadership work and another the Diana Award for her commitment to volunteering despite additional pressures from home as the main carer for her parents and siblings.  All 4 have become well respected and recognised role models for their peers and continue to receive recognition from a number of national organisations. This project is a first for the school and senior staff members have highly praised the work of these students. They have responded far beyond expectation to the opportunities presented to them and the mentoring support they have received. It is fitting recognition for the 4 to be recognised through this award.

I am absolutely delighted that our students have won this award from Business Wales. All their hard work and efforts developing our Sports Leaders Level 2 students has proved so successful. Our thanks to Jo Clay for tutoring them to develop their mentoring skills.” Glyn Jones, Assistant Head, St Christopher’s School

The success with this project has inspired and led Empower - Be The Change to roll out this programme to many groups across North Wales and has played a major part in the company's success to date.  To date we have empowered over 150 people through our programmes and have ambitious plans to empower over 1000 people by 2022. Mentoring is integral to what we do and we now encourage every participant on our programmes to become mentors to their friends, family members, peers and colleagues.

"I wanted to make a difference .......”

Molly Briskham, 2016 winner of                             “WCVA International Volunteer of the Year”

Awarded in recognition of her outstanding contribution during her volunteer placement in India with Empower – Be The Change, Molly shares what the award means to her and how volunteering has helped shape her future plans.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How does it feel to be awarded this accolade?

Amazing! I feel truly honoured and humbled to have won such an award. I still miss the country and the children everyday so its lovely to think that they enjoyed my time with them too! Its just the best feeling.

Why did you choose to volunteer in India?

I volunteered in India because I wanted to have new experiences, experiences that would not be available to me in my everyday life. I wanted to learn more about the rest of world and it's people and the only real way to do that was to see it for myself. I wanted to make a difference to someone else's life.

How has the placement changed you and your outlook?

For me, my placement in India molded me into the person that I've always wanted to be. It taught me to live life outside my comfort zone and to seize every opportunity. I learnt to laugh at every given opportunity and it gave me perspective on what is important. I also learnt a lot of life skills, be it catching a plane on my own, communicating through a language barrier or washing my clothes in a bucket!

What are your future volunteer plans?

Volunteering everywhere! I'm hoping to return to India this summer and cannot wait to see my boys again!  I hope to use volunteering as my way of seeing the world.

I'm also currently working to set up a volunteer network for those who are looking to complete a placement in India and those who already have as a sort of support system for anything that they may need to know or may want to be involved in.

What advice would you give to someone looking to volunteer in the UK and/or overseas?

Just do it! Don't even think about it! Just do it! As humans its in our nature to think decisions through but in doing so we often put up barriers that we can’t seem to break. In my experience in taking the risk and just saying yes I found that all of those barriers can be broken when you come to it its just a case of a little bit if creative thinking. So just say yes to an adventure and enjoy every single second of it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Volunteering moulded who I am”

Wondering what a volunteer placement with us is like? Here’s some highlights from this years “WCVA International Volunteer of the Year” award winner Molly Briskham.

Arriving in India

Jo and Swathi were there to meet us at the airport. On leaving the plane the first thing we noticed was that it was hot…very hot! As soon as we got out of passport control and into “India” we were no longer tired but excited to be here! So with our new found energy we headed off on the drive to the hostel.

At this point it was somewhere between 4 and 5 in the morning and still dark, so we were surprised to see how many people were up and about already. Sleep time again! I slept for most of the journey and woke up when we stopped to use the toilet. However this toilet was an ’ Indian toilet’ a hole in the ground… Next stop the boys hostel!

I have never seen such excited faces as when we drove into the hostel, it was the warmest welcome! The boys could not do enough for us carrying our bags and helping in any way they could.  When we stepped out of the car we were bombarded with handshakes high 5’s and lots of names!

Delivering the first lesson

Today was our first day of taking lessons so we were all up early in time for morning sports and excited. For my first lesson I was taking sports in St. Johns school. We were focusing on improving catching and passing skills. We started with a throwing the ball and shouting our name game and then went on to play fireball. After that we went into piggy back throwing and catching which the kids found very funny! We then had enough time for a couple of games of over and under before we finished and moved onto the next class.

Cultural differences

While we were doing this session I was surprised by the girls, they wouldn’t stand anywhere near the boys and when we asked them to complete a sporting activity they would just giggle! I ended up holding their hands running around so they had no choice but to run and had to do the circuit through with them. It’s sad to see that they have not had the sporting experience provided to them so that they can enjoy sports, Im so glad that we get that back at home.

Creativity in delivering sessions

I then had sports with St Johns for which I did treasure island, which I did to improve their problem solving and communication skills, which from what I’d seen in previous sessions was poor. Today again they were not talking and when I asked them to do it in teams they shot off seeing it as an individual race, so I took away some of the equipment which meant that they would not be able to make it to the finish line without moving the equipment, to do which they had to talk to each other and keep each other standing!

Weekend travel

We drove for around 2 hours to get to the waterfalls, we saw quite a few weddings on our drive, the girls had fallen asleep at this point but then I saw…an ELEPHANT! I screamed and made sure to wake the girls up like a child who had just seen santa! We noticed as we got nearer and nearer that there were monkeys just strutting around the town, which for us was really weird but the locals didn’t bat an eyelid.

We finally got to the falls and found more monkeys, lots of them, we walked to the falls and I went under them, there was no way I was missing out on the opportunity to do that the water felt amazing and it felt actually quite exciting.

Learning new skills

We had a couple of hours free then so we asked if it was possible to have a cooking lesson in the restaurant, learning how to cook our favourite parotta breads! We made quite a few and we’re rather impressed by our bread flipping skills! Definitely something I’ll be making when I get home!

A big tick off the “bucket list”

Today we went to see the elephants… ELEPHANTS!

This is something I’ve wanted to do since before I came and is definitely on the bucket list! When we saw them I was like a kid at Christmas,  I was in my element… or in my elephant!  It was such an amazing thing to see these beautiful animals and to be able to spend time with them washing them etc.

Leaving the hostel

Tonight is our last spoken English lesson in the hostel which is sad, so there was lots of cha cha sliding! We also started spinning each other around which was a bad idea because the boys started a competition who could spin us around the fastest, which meant us feeling sick and dizzy for the rest of the night! I made the most of homework time to night,  I love chatting with my Indian ’ brother’s ’ as they like to call themselves at this time and it’s something I’m really going to miss, one of many things!

A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE “My placement in India moulded me into the person that I've always wanted to be. It taught me to live life outside my comfort zone and to seize every opportunity. I learnt to laugh at every given opportunity and gained perspective on what is important. I hope to use volunteering as my way of seeing the world.”
